The Fire and the Forge: The Story Behind the Medallions

Minting Moments exists to turn a specific memory into something permanent: an anniversary, a promotion, a pet you lost, a team you were part of, a habit you're proud of keeping. Most gift and keepsake products are generic on purpose so they can be mass produced. We built the opposite: a process specific enough that your medallion, personalization included, exists nowhere else.

Every medallion starts as metal we cast ourselves in Copper, Nordic Gold, or Silver .999 Fine, then it's machined to a real 3mm relief and cut to an exact 2.5oz. That's not a marketing detail. It's a manufacturing choice that most of the industry skips because it's slower and harder to do consistently.

We deliberately kept the catalog to one thing done well instead of spreading across trophies, patches, or promotional junk the way most competitors do. If you're looking for a plaque or a lapel pin, we're not your shop. If you want a cast metal medallion that means something and was made by someone who'll stand behind it, that's exactly what we do.

Blank Medallion

How We Do It

Each medallion starts as a billet we cast in-house, not a pre-made blank pulled off a shelf. From there it goes through multiple CNC passes: a rough clearing pass to establish the shape, followed by a fine detail pass with a tapered ball bit that carves the actual relief. Every design is cut to a fixed 3mm relief depth, deep enough to read as real dimensional sculpture rather than a flat stamp.

After machining, we weigh the finished piece and calculate a final precision face cut to bring it to an exact 2.5oz target weight, every time, regardless of design. Personalization, when requested, is hand stamped into the back or edge rather than laser etched, and the finished piece is sealed with a clear lacquer coat to protect the patina and the metal underneath.

None of this is automated end to end, and that's the point. A machine doesn't decide when a cut is finished or catch a flaw before it ships, a person does. That's slower than running a die press, and it's why we're a made-to-order shop with a real turnaround time instead of a same-day print shop.

About Me

I'm the guy running the mill, mixing the alloy, and packing the box. Minting Moments isn't a studio with a team behind it, it's me: an engineer by trade who got tired of every "custom medallion" online meaning the same die-struck blank with a name stamped on it. I started casting and machining my own pieces because I wanted to make something that actually held up to the moment it was meant to represent.

Before this was a business, it was a shop project. I built the furnace, wrote the machining process, and spent a long stretch failing at both before a single piece was good enough to sell. That background matters here because it's the reason nothing about this process is outsourced or templated: I own every step, from raw metal to the piece in your hands.

I'm veteran-owned and family-run, and I take that seriously, not as a marketing line but as the standard I hold the work to. When you order from Minting Moments, you're not ordering from a catalog. You're ordering from the person who's going to be the one making it.

How We're Different

Search "custom medallion" and you'll find two kinds of shops: large industrial die-strikers quoting bulk institutional orders, and marketplace sellers hand-casting single pieces with no consistency between them. We built something that doesn't fit neatly into either category: single-piece retail with an industrial-grade manufacturing process behind it.

Nobody else in this space controls weight as a manufacturing spec. Competitors either don't mention weight at all, or list it as a side effect of whatever thickness and metal they happened to use. We cast, machine, weigh, and precision-cut every single piece to land on an exact target weight. That's a provable, specific claim, not a slogan, and as far as we've found, nobody else in this category does it.

We also refuse to be everything at once. Every competitor we've looked at sells medallions alongside trophies, patches, pins, or promotional swag, splitting their attention across a dozen unrelated processes. We do one thing, cast and CNC-machined metal medallions, and every improvement we make, whether it's mold design or bit strategy, goes into making that one thing better instead of getting spread thin across a catalog nobody needed.
